A figure of informal work in Morocco's souks

By Cristiano Vassalli

Location: Marocco
In Morocco around 77% of non-agricultural workers operate in the informal economy; the souk trades — wholesalers, retailers, helpers, porters — are the leading sector where this share concentrates.
In low- and middle-income countries almost 60% of workers over 65 are still active in the informal economy: with no pension, they work as long as the body holds.
Morocco launched a 2021 reform to extend health and pension coverage to the whole population: under the plan, the transition should complete by 2025. For those now in their seventies who have always worked day to day, the reform arrives too late.
Street vending is not a remnant of the past: it is the form in which half of humanity survives.
