Necchi, packing department

Pavia, c. 1950 — destination New York

Necchi of Pavia, founded in 1919, became in the 1950s one of Italy's leading exporters of sewing machines, with markets in over 80 countries and a significant share in the United States.
The Marshall Plan (1948-1952) allocated about 1.5 billion dollars to Italy, financing the modernisation of light industries such as Necchi, Olivetti and Candy.
Between 1950 and 1963 Italian GDP grew on average 5.8% per year and manufactured exports tripled: the so-called 'economic miracle'.
The Necchi sewing machine, with its Italian design and reliable motor, was one of the first post-war industrial objects to carry the idea of 'made in Italy' around the world.
