In 2024, 5.7 million people in Italy lived in absolute poverty — 9.7% of the population, the highest level ever recorded since 2005.
Over 2.3 million Italian households (8.8% of the total) are in energy poverty: they cannot adequately heat their home or regularly pay their bills.
Among those turning to Caritas centres, 23% are 'working poor': people with a job whose income still does not cover their essential monthly expenses.
